Alexander-Kenneth Nagel is Professor for the Social Scientific Study of Religion at the University of Göttingen, a position he has held since 2015. Previously, he served as Assistant Professor at the Centre for Religious Studies in Bochum (2009-2015). He holds an MA in Religious Studies (2004) and an MA in Sociology (2005) from the University of Bremen, and received his PhD (Dr. rer. pol.) in 2008 with a dissertation on institutional dynamics in policy networks.
His research examines immigration, religious pluralization, and interreligious encounters in Germany, along with modern apocalypticism. He specializes in analyzing how religious diversity manifests in societal structures, particularly through international collaborative projects.
Nagel leads or participates in several major research initiatives:
- Junior research group on 'Civic potentials of religious immigrant communities' (2009-2014)
- DFG-SNF project 'Religious and Social Identity in Civil Society' (RESIC, 2018-2021)
- Horizon 2020 project 'Multilevel Governance of Mass Migration in Europe and Beyond' (RESPOND, 2017-2021)
- Ongoing investigation of immigration/religious pluralization in rural Lower Saxony
He also contributes to the Max Planck Institute's ORA Joint Research Project 'Muslim-Jewish encounter, diversity & distance in urban Europe' (ENCOUNTERS).
