Alexander J. Martín

Alexander J. Martín is an archaeologist and faculty member at Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP), affiliated with the Department of Anthropology, Geospatial and Earth Sciences within the Kopchick College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. He holds a PhD from the University of Pittsburgh and currently manages the Comparative Archaeology Database at the University of Pittsburgh’s Center for Comparative Archaeology.

Explores how prehistoric societies evolved from small villages into complex polities, focusing on the roles of economic, political, and religious institutions. Specializes in coastal Ecuador and comparative studies of pre-Columbian societies across the Andes and Intermediate Area. Utilizes GIS/spatial analyses, multivariate statistics, and demographic reconstructions to identify patterns in social development.

Additional Roles:
Serves as Associate Director of the Center for Comparative Archaeology (University of Pittsburgh) and maintains a focus on institutional change and universal vs. society-specific religious behaviors.
