Marc Bermann is an Associate Professor in the Department of Anthropology at the Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences, University of Pittsburgh. His research focuses on prehistoric states and household archaeology, with fieldwork centered on pre-Inca civilizations in Bolivia and Peru. He currently serves as Director of Graduate Studies.
His interests include the evolution of archaic empires, pre-Hispanic political organization, historiography, and peasant studies. Fieldwork examines village sites of the Formative Period Wankarani culture in Bolivia.
Courses taught include Paleo-Kitchen: Prehistoric Diet, Cooking, and Domesticity; Prehistoric Village Life; Origins of Cities; and Archaeology Core Course, exploring human cultural evolution from Paleolithic beginnings to state-level societies.
