Dr. Alexander J. Martín is an anthropologist and Associate Director of the University of Pittsburgh's Center for Comparative Archaeology. His research focuses on prehistoric social institutions, particularly how religious, political, and economic systems influenced societal complexity. He has conducted extensive fieldwork in coastal Ecuador, analyzing transitions from small villages to complex polities. He also compares pre-Columbian societies across the Americas to understand universal vs. culturally specific religious behaviors.
Education: Ph.D. (2009) and M.A. (2001) in Anthropology from the University of Pittsburgh and Florida Atlantic University, respectively. He has held visiting professorships and temporary professor roles at institutions like Indiana University of Pennsylvania and the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Ecuador.
Research emphasizes comparative archaeology, with specialties in GIS/spatial analysis and multivariate statistics. His work has been funded by grants including the NSF Doctoral Dissertation Improvement Grant and the Howard Heinz Endowment Fellowship. He has authored/co-authored over 20 peer-reviewed articles and books, including a forthcoming monograph on religious evolution.
Teaching includes courses on archaeological methods, data analysis, and cultural anthropology at both undergraduate and graduate levels. He has led field schools in Ecuador and Costa Rica, and organized international conferences on comparative archaeology.
