Daniela Balanzategui

Daniela Balanzategui is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Anthropology at UMass Boston. Her work focuses on historical and collaborative archaeology of the African Diaspora in Latin America, with a feminist perspective.

Her research examines Afro-Ecuadorian strategies for surviving slavery, structural racism, and gender discrimination through material culture, ancestral territories, historical narratives, and oral traditions. Since 2012, she has led a community-based archaeological project in collaboration with Afro-Ecuadorian communities, emphasizing ethical heritage management and public archaeology.
