Prof. Alexander Flügel is a full professor and director of the Institute for Neuroimmunology and Multiple Sclerosis Research at the University of Göttingen. Previously, he served as an associate professor for Experimental Immunology at LMU Munich and led a group at the Max Planck Institute for Neurobiology. His research focuses on T cell mechanisms in central nervous system (CNS) autoimmunity, including T cell entry into the CNS, communication within this environment, and therapeutic development.
Education: MD from LMU Munich (1993). Career highlights include group leadership at the Max Planck Institute (2002–2007) and academic promotions at LMU Munich and the University of Göttingen.
Research interests include developing models for CNS autoimmunity, understanding pathogenesis in neuroimmune diseases, and analyzing therapeutic mechanisms. His work bridges molecular immunology and clinical applications, with notable contributions to meningeal biology, lung microbiome interactions, and synuclein-related neurodegeneration.
Affiliated with the GGNB programs in Neurosciences, Molecular Biology of Cells, and Molecular Medicine. His lab focuses on translating immunological insights into clinical therapies.
