Dr. Alexander Cullen is an Associate Professor in Political Ecology at the Department of Geography, University of Cambridge. He holds a PhD from the University of Melbourne and a BSci (Hons) from the University of Western Australia. His research focuses on environmental governance, land conflict, and post-conflict development in Southeast Asia, particularly Timor-Leste. He examines how power dynamics shape livelihood transitions, conservation policies, and national identity constructions in post-independence contexts.

Dr. Cullen’s work integrates political ecology, critical GIS, and participatory methodologies. Key themes include customary resource management, climate change politics in Southeast Asia, and the role of nature in state-building. Current projects explore climate change in Myanmar’s urbanization, ICT in PNG’s environmental monitoring, and Timor-Leste’s resistance music histories.
His publications address topics like 'transitional environmentality' in Timor-Leste and participatory tools for indigenous land mapping. He has supervised PhD student Carolyn Smith and previously worked at Monash University and the University of Melbourne. He is affiliated with the Vital Geographies and Geographies of Knowledge research groups.
