Alexander Bruggisser is a PhD Fellow at Roskilde University's Department of Social Sciences and Business, affiliated with the Velux-funded HUMpraxis project "The Intuitive Encounter: Existence and Ethics in Bindeleddet’s Expanding Social Work with Youth." His research investigates ethical, existential, and relational dimensions of volunteer mentorship for socially vulnerable youth through the Danish NGO Bindeleddet.
Bruggisser's work synthesizes phenomenological philosophy and sociological theory to examine recognition dynamics in asymmetric mentoring relationships. Using Edith Stein's empathy framework and Hartmut Rosa's resonance theory, he analyzes how moments of connection emerge amid uncertainty and emotional intensity. His abductive methodology treats empirical data as co-experienced knowledge, challenging instrumental views of mentorship by framing it as an ethical practice central to civil society's care functions.
Bruggisser collaborates internationally with Hartmut Rosa at Erfurt University and Mette Lebech at Maynooth University, presenting findings through academic partnerships. His research directly engages with the Velux Foundation's HUMpraxis project funding structure while contributing to UN Sustainable Development Goals in welfare systems and ethical frameworks.
His empirical work occurs within Bindeleddet's mentorship programs, where field observations and reflective journals generate situated knowledge. Theoretical development occurs through cross-institutional dialogue between Roskilde University, Erfurt University, and Maynooth University, creating a transnational research ecosystem focused on civil society's role in social vulnerability contexts.
