Alexa von Winning is an Assistant Professor of Eastern European History at the University of Tuebingen's Institute of Eastern European History. She specializes in economic, social, and imperial history, with a focus on Russia and the post-Soviet space. Her research examines neoliberal discourses, familial dynamics in imperial contexts, and the interplay of religion and gender.
Education: PhD in History (University of Tuebingen, 2018). Notable works include Intimate Empire: The Mansurov Family in Russia and the Orthodox East, 1855–1917 (Oxford UP, 2022), which explores transregional elites in the Russian Empire. She co-edits thematic issues in journals like Geschichte in Wissenschaft und Unterricht and Religion und Gesellschaft in Ost und West.
Her current research at the Imre Kertész Kolleg investigates 'becoming capitalist' in Russia and Belarus (1970–2000), analyzing how neoliberal practices and 'self-help' cultural tools were deployed during post-socialist transitions. This project bridges late Soviet and early post-Soviet eras, emphasizing continuity and transformation in economic and social behavior.
Publications span monographs, edited volumes, and peer-reviewed articles addressing themes like music and resistance, familial structures in empires, and gendered agency. Her work often combines micro-historical approaches with broader socio-political analysis.
