Alexa von Winning is a Lecturer in Eastern European and Modern History at the Institute for Eastern European History and Area Studies, University of Tübingen. She serves as Deputy Director of the institute and is a member of the Center for Biography Research since 2015. Her academic journey includes a Magistra Artium (2010) and a PhD (2018) from Tübingen University.

Her scholarly work examines how mobile elite families shaped Russian imperial policy through religious investments and personal networks, with particular attention to women's roles in empire-building. Her 2022 monograph Intimate Empire analyzes the Mansurov family's influence on Orthodox institutions across Jerusalem, Constantinople, and Riga.
Recent publications explore digital tools in historical education and contested historical narratives in Eastern Europe. She has held fellowships at the German Historical Institute Moscow (2010), Konrad Adenauer Foundation (2011-2016), and the Athene Program at Tübingen (2013-2017).
