Prof. Alexa Alice Joubin is a distinguished scholar in Shakespeare Studies, Digital Humanities, and Global Cultural Exchange. She holds a joint appointment as Professor in English, Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, Theatre, International Affairs, and East Asian Languages and Cultures at George Washington University (GW). She co-founded GW’s Digital Humanities Institute and co-directs the Taiwan Education and Research Program. She also holds the John M. Kirk, Jr. Chair in Medieval and Renaissance Literature at Middlebury College’s Bread Loaf School of English.
Her research focuses on global Shakespearean adaptations, race, gender, and digital humanities. Major works include Shakespeare and East Asia (Oxford UP, 2021), co-authored Race (Routledge, 2019), and edited volumes like Shakespeare and the Ethics of Appropriation (Palgrave, 2014). Her digital projects include the open-access Global Shakespeares video archive at MIT.
Joubin has received prestigious awards including the MLA Scaglione Prize and GW’s Martin Luther King Jr. Award. She chairs the MLA’s New Variorum Edition of Shakespeare and edits Palgrave’s Global Shakespeares series. Her advocacy spans congressional testimony on humanities and globalization, BBC interviews, and public talks on AI in education.
Her teaching emphasizes equity, digital literacy, and inclusive pedagogy. She developed the open-access textbook Screening Shakespeare and leads initiatives like GW’s Public Interest Technology Scholar program.
