Alex Wiedemann is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Computational Data Science at Hamline University. He serves as a senior researcher in the Data Science, Police Accountability, and Community Engagement (DSPACE) Group within the Institute for the Quantitative Study of Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity (QSIDE Institute), and holds the position of Chair of Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Accessibility for Spectra, The Association of LGBTQ+ Mathematicians.
His research centers on complex and dynamical systems with applications spanning data science, network dynamics, quantum dynamics, cybercrime, and genome rearrangement. He actively explores interdisciplinary problem spaces while investigating how diversity and inclusivity principles can transform mathematics education, particularly through developing teaching practices that better serve underserved student populations. His work bridges theoretical frameworks with real-world social applications through initiatives like the DSPACE Group.
Wiedemann champions the philosophy that "Mathematics is a skill, not a subject," emphasizing intuitive understanding over rote memorization. Through his leadership roles in Spectra and QSIDE Institute, he drives systemic change in mathematical communities by implementing equity-centered practices and fostering inclusive learning environments that prioritize student-centered construction of mathematical knowledge.
