Alex Waterman

Dr. Alex Waterman is a Lecturer in Peace Studies and International Development at the University of Bradford since October 2023. He serves as Co-Editor of the Civil Wars journal (since January 2022) and was a Research Fellow at the GIGA Institute for Asian Studies (2021–2023) under the project "World Order Narratives of the Global South."

His research focuses on Peace and Security with specific interests in: Narratives and local order in counterinsurgency/ceasefires, Armed Order Making in Northeast India, Comparing Order and Knowledge across Counterinsurgencies, and Rebel Ordering and Governance. He has analyzed state-rebel conflicts in Northeast India using multidisciplinary data and studied the impact of global crises like the pandemic on rebel governance structures.

Recent publications address: (1) typologies for Northeast Indian conflicts, (2) pandemic effects on insurgency dynamics, (3) Global South perspectives on global order, (4) Indian military doctrine evolution, and (5) non-territorial rebel governance in Assam. These works span political science, international relations, public health, and military studies.

Scientific Awards:

• Global Policy North Outstanding Thesis Prize (2020)

As an advisor, he briefed German Bundestag members on Northeast India conflicts. He organized academic workshops on asymmetric conflict control and contributed to knowledge transfer through lectures and media engagements, including BBC Radio Leeds interviews on Ukraine military strategy.
