Dr. James Worrall is an Associate Professor in International Relations and Middle East Studies at the University of Leeds' School of Politics and International Studies (Faculty of Social Sciences). He holds PhD and MA degrees from Leeds, focusing on Anglo-Omani relations. His research spans Gulf and Levant politics, security studies, counterinsurgency, and non-democratic regime stability. He co-edits the journal Civil Wars and leads projects like the Gerda Henkel Foundation-funded 'Dancing with Devils: How Militaries Integrate Rebel Understandings into Counterinsurgency.'
Research focuses include Western-Arab relations, security sector reform, and sub-state conflict dynamics. Awards include fellowships from the Royal Historical Society and Royal Geographical Society. He teaches modules on international politics, foreign policy, and Middle Eastern governance. Recent publications include monographs on Omani counterinsurgency history and Hezbollah's political evolution.
