Alex Trew is a Professor of Economics at the University of Glasgow's Adam Smith Business School since 2019. Previously, he held roles as Senior Lecturer (2017-19) and Lecturer (2007-17) at the University of St Andrews. His research focuses on economic growth, economic geography, economic history, and financial development. He holds a PhD in Economics from the University of St Andrews (2004-07) with a thesis on microfoundations of finance and growth, an MSc from the University of Warwick (2003-04), and a First Class BA in Economics from the University of Durham (2000-03).
Key research interests include the interplay between finance and economic growth, spatial development patterns during industrialization, and the long-term impacts of historical institutions and policies. His work often combines theoretical modeling with empirical analysis, addressing topics like infrastructure financing, aid effectiveness, and pollution's persistent neighborhood effects.
Publications span journals such as the Journal of Political Economy, Journal of the European Economic Association, and Review of Economic Dynamics. He has secured significant research funding, including from the Institute for New Economic Thinking and the Shell Foundation. Trew advises PhD students on topics like aid and growth, endogenous growth theory, and infrastructure development.
He serves as a Fellow at CESifo, IZA, and the Higher Education Academy, along with administrative roles like External Examiner at the University of Bristol and Director of the MRes Economics program at Glasgow.
