Alex Shakar is an Associate Professor and Director of Creative Writing in the Department of English at the University of Illinois, affiliated with the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences. He holds a B.A. from Yale, an M.A. from the University of Texas at Austin (with Michener Fellowships), and a Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Chicago. His research focuses on creative writing across fiction, non-fiction, and science/technology themes. Shakar has authored acclaimed novels like Luminarium (2011 Los Angeles Times Book Prize winner), The Savage Girl, and City in Love, alongside short stories and essays published in Ploughshares, The Millions, and The Wall Street Journal.
His work explores existential themes, urban environments, and the intersection of technology with human experience. Recent achievements include a 2015 short story in Ploughshares and residencies at prestigious institutions like Yaddo and UCross. Shakar’s awards include the FC2 National Fiction Competition and multiple notable book listings from major publications.
He advises creative writing programs and contributes to literary culture through public appearances and academic leadership. His writing often blends metaphysical inquiry with sharp social critique, reflecting a deep engagement with contemporary societal and technological landscapes.
