Alex Rowell is a Teaching Fellow in the School of Psychology at Queen's University Belfast (QUB). As a registered clinical psychologist, his clinical expertise focuses on mood disorders, trauma, anxiety, personality disorders, and burnout/compassion fatigue in adults. His research emphasizes men's mental health, gender identity, masculinities, peripartum mental health, and psychodynamic psychotherapy. He teaches at both undergraduate and doctoral levels, coordinating modules such as PSY3130 (Depression and Anxiety) and PSY9053-5 (Clinical Psychology series).
Rowell has held clinical roles across NHS settings, in-patient facilities, private practice, and hospitals in the US. His 2016 research on men, masculinity, and mental health explored how evolving gender norms influence help-seeking behaviors. He has received awards from the American Psychological Association (Division 51) and Alliant International University.
He actively contributes to professional development through invited talks on clinical supervision and attachment theory, and has engaged in media commentary on veterinary mental health and pet attachment. His work aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals related to mental health and gender equality.
