Alex Rice serves as Professor of Mathematics at Millsaps College, joining in fall 2017 after visiting positions at Bucknell University and the University of Rochester. He balances teaching across all levels, research, student collaboration, and service including directing the Honors Program and hosting an annual high school math competition.
His educational background features a Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Georgia (2012).
Rice's research spans Number Theory, Combinatorics, and Analysis with emphasis on additive combinatorics. His work investigates structural properties of difference sets, polynomial configurations, and recurrence theorems in ergodic theory, frequently involving undergraduate researchers through the Kinnaird summer program. This interdisciplinary approach bridges discrete mathematics with analytical methods.
Publication trends reveal consistent focus on combinatorial number theory, particularly extending classical results like the Sárközy-Furstenberg theorem. His collaborative model with undergraduates (21 co-authors across seven papers) demonstrates commitment to accessible research mentorship at a PUI institution.
Key recognitions include:
- AMS-Simons Research Grant for PUI Faculty (2023-26)
- Halmos-Ford Award for expository writing (MAA MathFest 2023)
- Richard A. Smith Award for Scholarship/Creative Work (Millsaps, 2021-22)
- Janet R. Langley Award for Academic Advising (Millsaps, 2021-22)
Rice has secured significant research funding through the AMS-Simons Grant while mentoring 21 undergraduate co-authors between 2019-2024. His advising philosophy integrates research with academic guidance, recognized by Millsaps' Langley Award. He actively recruits students through the Kinnaird program and math competitions.
Beyond research, Rice directs the Millsaps Honors Program and organizes community outreach via annual high school math competitions, strengthening institutional connections with local educational networks.
