Alex P. Smith is a Lecturer in the Department of Political Science at the University of Iowa, part of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. His research focuses on American institutions (Congress & Presidency), legislative negotiation, political theory, and the scholarship of teaching and learning. He is currently working on a book project about negotiation strategies to overcome congressional stalemate, supported by a Library of Congress Fellowship in Congressional Policymaking.
Education: PhD from the University of Florida (2020). Prior to academia, he worked as a legislative staffer in the U.S. House of Representatives and the Minnesota House of Representatives.
Research interests include exploring legislative dynamics, public policy mechanisms, and pedagogical innovations in political science education. His work bridges theoretical frameworks with practical governance analysis.
