Alex Molasiotis

Professor Alex Molasiotis is Pro Vice-Chancellor and Dean at the University of Derby, within the College of Arts, Humanities and Education. His academic home is in the Office of the Vice-Chancellor, reflecting his senior leadership role. He brings a distinguished background in health sciences and nursing, having previously held professorial and leadership positions at the University of Manchester and Hong Kong Polytechnic University.

His research interests are centered on supportive and palliative care, with a strong emphasis on symptom management in cancer patients. Key areas include chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV), breathlessness and cough in lung cancer, cancer-related peripheral neuropathy, and integrative approaches such as acupuncture and acupressure. He also explores the intersection of art and health to improve patient outcomes.

His recent publications reveal a strong focus on global health, ageing, and symptom burden, particularly through contributions to the Global Burden of Disease Study. There is a clear trend toward large-scale, multinational, and interdisciplinary research on patient-reported outcomes, unmet needs, and the development of clinical tools and guidelines.

Professor Molasiotis has graduated over 20 PhD students and continues to supervise doctoral candidates. He has secured over £10 million in competitive research funding from sources such as the UK's NIHR, Marie Curie, and Hong Kong's Health & Medical Research Fund. He is Editor-in-Chief of the European Journal of Oncology Nursing and has led major international research collaborations, including the Greater Bay Area Nursing Research & Knowledge Transfer Alliance. His work has directly influenced international clinical guidelines from MASCC/ESMO, NICE, ACCP, NCCN, and ASCO.

He leads and participates in numerous international consortia, serves on the boards of several professional societies and journals, and acts as a consultant for government agencies and industry partners worldwide.
