Dr. Alex Mitsialis is a Professor and Director of Animal Models of Lung Diseases within the Division of Newborn Medicine at Harvard Medical School and Boston Children's Hospital. With over four decades of research experience, he leads investigations into the molecular basis of pulmonary diseases, particularly those affecting newborns and infants. His laboratory develops and utilizes sophisticated animal models to understand disease mechanisms and identify potential therapeutic approaches for conditions like bronchopulmonary dysplasia and pulmonary hypertension.
Dr. Mitsialis' educational background includes a B.A. in Biochemistry from Princeton University (1974), a Ph.D. in Microbiology from Columbia University (1983), and postdoctoral training in Developmental Biology at Harvard University (1986). His research program spans three primary areas: molecular biology of oxygen-induced lung injury and protective mechanisms, polymorphisms of cytoprotective genes in lung disease, and respiratory epithelium function in airway diseases like Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia.
Analysis of his recent publications (2021-2024) reveals a strong focus on mesenchymal stromal cell therapies and extracellular vesicles as treatments for neonatal lung diseases. His work demonstrates how these therapies modulate immune responses, particularly through macrophage regulation, to prevent and repair lung injury in conditions like bronchopulmonary dysplasia and pulmonary hypertension. The research shows significant translational potential with applications in preterm lung development and preeclampsia-related complications.
Dr. Mitsialis has received numerous honors including the NIH F.I.R.S.T. Award, Medical Foundation Fellowship, and multiple postdoctoral fellowships from NIH and the American Cancer Society. His early career was recognized with the CRC Freshman Chemistry Achievement Award, Princeton University Scholarship, and National Science Foundation Traineeship.
His laboratory maintains active research programs investigating the therapeutic potential of stem cell-derived extracellular vesicles, the molecular mechanisms of heme oxygenase-1 in pulmonary protection, and the development of novel animal models for ciliopathies. Current work focuses on how these approaches can be translated to clinical applications for neonatal lung diseases.
