Dr Alex Marlow-Mann is a Lecturer in Italian and Film at the University of Kent, School of Arts. His academic journey includes undergraduate studies at Kent, an MA in Film Archiving from the University of East Anglia, and a PhD in Italian Film from the University of Reading. He has held teaching positions at the Universities of Leeds, St Andrews, and Birmingham before returning to Kent in 2015. His research focuses on Italian and world cinema, particularly exploring film and politics, regional cinemas, film festivals, archiving, and popular genres like thrillers and horror. Currently, he is completing a monograph on The Political Thriller in Its Global Context for Edinburgh University Press.
Marlow-Mann has extensive editorial roles, including serving on the editorial boards of Journal of Italian Cinema and Media Studies, Open Screens, and Cine-Excess, as well as joint series editor of the Routledge Remapping World Cinemas series. He also contributed to the founding of the British Association of Film, Television and Screen Studies.
His teaching spans film analysis, European political cinema, modern Italian culture, and language. Recent publications include book chapters on Neapolitan cinema, regional cinema dynamics, and archival film festivals, alongside reviews of key texts in Italian film studies. His work bridges academic research with cultural practice, reflecting his engagement with film archives, festivals, and transnational cinema.
