- MAppSci in Geospatial Science, RMIT University
- PhD in Landscape Ecology, RMIT University
- Certificate in Higher Education, University of Nottingham
His research centers on integrated socio-environmental approaches, spatially explicit modelling, remote sensing, and landscape ecology. Key areas include sustainable urban planning, biodiversity conservation, natural resource management, and nature-based solutions for urban sustainability. He applies machine learning and big environmental data to model environmental threats from infrastructure and extractive industries, particularly in Southeast Asia, Oceania, and Europe.
His recent publications highlight contributions to biodiversity safeguards in global development projects, the application of nature-based solutions in low- and middle-income countries, and the use of remote sensing in forest ecology. These works reflect a strong interdisciplinary focus on policy-relevant environmental science.
Dr Lechner leads major funded research projects such as the Citarum Action Research Program, MUST: Enabling Multi-species Transitions, and initiatives on peatland carbon emissions and transboundary haze. He collaborates widely across institutions, including the University of Helsinki, and engages in science communication through media contributions on urban planning in Indonesia.
He advises on interdisciplinary research frameworks and promotes co-production of knowledge across scientific, journalistic, and public domains. His leadership in research governance and transdisciplinary collaboration underscores his role in advancing sustainability science in Asia-Pacific contexts.
