معرفی
Dr Alex Ireland is a Reader in Musculoskeletal Physiology at Manchester Metropolitan University’s Institute of Sport. His research focuses on the effects of mechanical loading on bones and joints across the lifespan, including prenatal movements and aging processes. He examines neuromuscular health in both healthy and clinical populations, with particular attention to skeletal development in infants and exercise impacts in older adults.
- Academic Roles: Theme Lead for Musculoskeletal Function in Health and Ageing, Co-Chair of the ECTS Academy, and Editor for Journal of Bone and Mineral Research.
- Research Interests: Bone adaptation to physical activity, prenatal skeletal programming, neuromuscular interactions, and clinical bone pathologies like osteogenesis imperfecta and X-linked hypophosphatemia.
His work bridges basic science and clinical applications, emphasizing how movement patterns influence skeletal health throughout life. Recent studies explore osteosarcopenia prevalence in Indian populations, longitudinal effects of burosumab therapy in X-linked hypophosphatemia, and bone geometry in athletes versus non-athletes.
Dr Ireland collaborates internationally on projects such as the MRC National Survey of Health and Development and the Mugello study on aging biomarkers. His research outputs span epidemiology, clinical trials, and biomechanical modeling, often integrating advanced imaging techniques like peripheral quantitative computed tomography (pQCT).
