Dr. Alex Hayashi is a Lecturer in Music (Oboe/English Horn) at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa and an Instructor of Oboe at Western Michigan University. Originally from Honolulu, he holds a BM (2011) from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and an MM (2013) and DMA (2016) in oboe performance from the University of Michigan.
His teaching spans beginner to advanced students, with many achieving top placements in all-state orchestras, superior festival ratings, and admissions to elite music programs like Eastman and USC. He conducts summer masterclasses in Japan and serves as faculty at the Clear Creek Music Festival.
A versatile performer, he has played with orchestras such as the Detroit Symphony and Tokyo’s TAD Wind Symphony. His international engagements include the Barbirolli International Oboe Festival, where he won the Jennifer Elstub Memorial Prize. He co-recorded the album JAPONICA (Equilibrium Records), featuring Japanese oboe works, and performed it at the 2018 International Double Reed Society Conference in Spain.
His mentors include Dr. Nancy Ambrose King and Dr. Stephen Caplan. He collaborates with ensembles like the Emblems Quintet and Argentum Chamber Works, blending classical and Japanese musical traditions.
