Dr. Alex Hands is a Researcher at the University of Surrey's Department of Electronic Engineering, part of the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences. He specializes in space weather, radiation effects on spacecraft electronics, and atmospheric radiation modeling. His work focuses on internal charging mitigation in space environments and developing tools like the MOBE-DIC model for predicting electron fluxes in MEO orbits. He collaborates with institutions such as ESA and NASA on projects including the Galileo satellite system and the CIRCE CubeSat mission.
Key contributions include validating internal charging simulation tools (e.g., MCICT, DICTAT) using the REEF facility, advancing radiation dosimetry for aviation and space tourism, and analyzing extreme space weather events' impacts on critical infrastructure. His research addresses risks from solar particle events (SPEs) and ground-level enhancements (GLEs), with applications to satellite safety and high-altitude flight regulations.
Hands leads the SAIRA citizen science network for atmospheric radiation monitoring and contributed to the MAIRE+ model for real-time aviation radiation nowcasting. His work bridges fundamental physics and applied engineering, ensuring robust space systems and safer aviation operations in extreme space weather conditions.
