Xiaojia Zhang is an Associate Professor of Physics at UT Dallas, investigating wave-particle interactions in planetary magnetospheres. Her NASA-funded research analyzes electron precipitation mechanisms using satellite data from ELFIN CubeSats and Juno missions, with implications for space weather modeling.
She discovered superfast electron rain phenomena in Earth's radiation belts, demonstrating how whistler waves accelerate electron loss into the atmosphere. Her work extends to Jovian magnetospheric dynamics and instrument development for space missions.
Awards include the URSI Young Scientist Award (2021). She directs the William B. Hanson Center for Space Sciences and leads international collaborations on magnetospheric physics.
