Professor Alex Ford is a Professor of Biology at the University of Portsmouth's School of the Environment and Life Sciences, within the Faculty of Science and Health. He holds leadership roles as Director of Research Degrees and School REF Coordinator. His expertise spans marine biology, ecotoxicology, and parasitology, focusing on contaminant effects in crustaceans and their parasites. Ford has a PhD from Napier University (2004) and prior academic roles at institutions such as the University of Swansea and UHI Millennium Institute. He is an editor for several journals, emphasizing invertebrate ecotoxicology and marine biology. His research addresses endocrine disruptors, plastics, nanoparticles, and pharmaceutical impacts on aquatic systems. Recent work explores PFAS contamination, pyridine toxicity myths, and low ethnic diversity in marine sciences. Ford supervises PhD students and contributes to interdisciplinary projects like the Centre for Integrated Health and Wellbeing.
Education: BSc (Plymouth University, 1993–1996), MSc (University of Wales Swansea, 1997), PhD (Napier University, 2001–2004). Teaching includes marine ecology, ecotoxicology, and pollution science. Research outputs span over 100 peer-reviewed articles, with a focus on behavioral and chemical ecotoxicology. Collaborations include international panels on chemicals and pollution policy.
Key research interests include: marine contaminants, ecotoxicology of invertebrates, behavioral toxicology, and environmental policy. His work bridges academic research with practical applications, such as sewage pollution analysis and citizen science initiatives.
