Alex F. de Cosson, Ph.D., serves as a Lecturer in the Department of Curriculum Studies, Faculty of Education, University of British Columbia. He teaches ETEC 532 for the Master of Educational Technology program and holds dual administrative roles as Coordinator of the Teaching From The Heart Cohort for the Teacher Education Office and Academic Advisor for the Burnaby Visual and Performing Arts Cohort.
His educational background includes:
- MFA from York University
- Ph.D. (institution not specified in source text)
De Cosson's research centers on arts-based and autobiographical ways of knowing through a/r/tography—a fusion of artistic practice, research, and pedagogy. He champions art-making as fundamental to classroom well-being and curriculum design, with publications exploring embodied learning and teacher identity. His 2004 co-edited volume 'A/r/tography: Rendering Self through Arts-Based Living Inquiry' established foundational frameworks, while his 2007 contribution to the 'Handbook of the Arts in Qualitative Research' expanded methodological applications across educational contexts.
He received UBC's Gordon and Marion Smith Award for Excellence in Art Education in 2003. Major research funding includes grants from the Canada Council for the Arts, Ontario Arts Council, and BC Arts Council supporting community-based arts initiatives.
With 25+ years as a professional sculptor exhibiting internationally, de Cosson integrates artistic practice into pedagogy through his 'pedagogy of walking' philosophy—recently demonstrated by completing the Victoria International Marathon in 4:47. Since 1987, he has directed Inner City Angels programs bringing artist-centered art education to Toronto's underserved schools.
