Alex Edwards is an Instructor in the Department of Biostatistics and Bioinformatics at Emory University’s Rollins School of Public Health. He also serves as a lead research informatics analyst at the Medical and Health Informatics Core, where he supports data-driven research initiatives across Emory’s medical and public health programs. Edwards is concurrently pursuing a PhD at the University of Lincoln, UK, focusing on spatial modeling of HIV multi-morbidity in sub-Saharan Africa.
Edwards holds a Bachelor of Arts from Emory University (three separate degrees noted), an MSPH from the Rollins School of Public Health at Emory, and a Doctor of Philosophy from Stellenbosch University. His research interests span HIV/AIDS prevention, global health challenges, non-communicable diseases, spatial epidemiology, biostatistics, and data science applications in public health.
His work emphasizes the intersection of HIV with other health conditions, particularly using geospatial techniques to map healthcare needs and disparities in South Africa. Recent studies explore mental health indicators like depression as predictors of HIV treatment failure, food insecurity’s impact on medication efficacy, and the epidemiological convergence of communicable and non-communicable diseases. He also investigates opioid use patterns in surgical patients and tuberculosis diagnostic practices in the U.S.
Edwards collaborates with the Medical and Health Informatics Core to enhance data analysis capacities for medical research. His educational background and ongoing PhD reflect a commitment to bridging statistical methods with real-world public health challenges, particularly in spatial modeling and molecular epidemiology.
