Alex Almoudaris serves as an Honorary Clinical Research Fellow at Imperial College London's Department of Surgery & Cancer within the Faculty of Medicine. With a background spanning medical training, surgical specialization, and advanced research, he focuses on measuring and improving surgical performance through both quantitative metrics and qualitative behavioral analysis. His work bridges clinical practice with data science to enhance patient safety and healthcare quality.
Dr. Almoudaris completed his undergraduate medical training and BSc in Surgery and Anaesthesia at Imperial College London starting in 1998. He undertook Basic Surgical Training and Higher Specialist Training in London, achieving Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in England (FRCS) and Completion of Surgical Training (CCT). His academic credentials include a PhD with thesis titled "High Performance in Surgery," funded by an NIHR grant.
- BSc (Hons.) in Surgery and Anaesthesia, Imperial College London
- MBBS (Medical Degree)
- MRCS (Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons)
- PhD in High Performance in Surgery
- DIC (Diploma of Imperial College)
His research centers on developing metrics for defining high performance in surgery and healthcare organizations using big data analytics. He has defined novel award-winning metrics that influenced national policy in risk and complications management. Beyond quantitative analysis, he collaborates with health psychologists to understand the behavioral and organizational factors influencing surgical outcomes through projects like the High Performance in Surgery (HiPer) study.
His publication record demonstrates consistent scholarly output with recent work focusing on failure to rescue mechanisms, surgical complication impacts on psychosocial wellbeing, and innovative approaches to surgical education and technique. His research spans colorectal surgery, bariatric procedures, trauma care, and minimally invasive techniques, consistently applying rigorous analytical methods to improve patient outcomes.
Dr. Almoudaris has received numerous professional recognitions including the Margaret Witt Scholarship from the Royal College of Surgeons England (2018), the British Journal of Surgery prize for best oral presentation (2011), and multiple prestigious traveling fellowships.
