Alessandro Vespignani is the Sternberg Family Distinguished Professor of Physics at Northeastern University and founding director of the Northeastern Network Science Institute in Boston. He holds a B.S. and Ph.D. in physics from the University of Rome 'La Sapienza', with postdoctoral research at Yale University and Leiden University. Previously, he served as the J.H. Rudy Professor of Computer Science and Information Technology at Indiana University (2004–2011), founding director of the Center for Complex Networks and Systems Research, and associate director of the Pervasive Technology Institute.
His research focuses on data-driven computational modeling of epidemic and diffusion phenomena, integrating biological, social, and technological networks. He has held affiliations at the International Center for Theoretical Physics (UNESCO) in Trieste and the University of Paris Sud (CNRS).
Dr. Vespignani is an elected Fellow of the American Physical Society, Fellow of the Academy of Europe, and Fellow of Harvard University's Institute for Quantitative Social Sciences. His work bridges physics, computer science, and public health, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to complex systems.
He leads the Northeastern Network Science Institute, advancing research on networks' structure and dynamics, with applications to disease spread, technological innovation, and societal challenges. His career reflects a commitment to computational modeling and interdisciplinary collaboration across academia and global institutions.
