Alessandro Vespignani

Alessandro Vespignani is the Director of the Network Science Institute and holds the Sternberg Family Distinguished Professor title at Northeastern University. He has joint appointments in the College of Science, Khoury College of Computer Sciences, and Bouvé College of Health Sciences, reflecting his interdisciplinary research in complex systems and public health.

His research focuses on techno-social systems, where technological and social infrastructures interact. Key areas include modeling contagion processes in structured populations, developing predictive tools for emerging diseases, analyzing social and information networks, and understanding adaptive social behaviors. His work integrates data science, statistical physics, and computational modeling to forecast epidemic spread.

His recent publications center on COVID-19 and influenza modeling, with a strong emphasis on real-time forecasting, human mobility, vaccine equity, and behavioral responses. These studies leverage large-scale datasets and network science to inform public health policy and intervention strategies.
