Alessandro Carmelo Lanzafame is an Associate Professor of Astrophysics, Cosmology and Space Science at the University of Catania, affiliated with the INAF-OACT (National Institute for Astrophysics - Catania Astrophysical Observatory). His career spans theoretical and observational research in stellar and solar physics, with key roles in the ESA Gaia mission data consortium.
- B.S. in Physics (1989) and PhD in Physics (1994, Queen’s University Belfast)
- Postdoc at Armagh Observatory (1990-1994) and Strathclyde University (1995-1996)
- Faculty member at University of Catania since 1997
His research focuses on stellar rotation and magnetic activity, with groundbreaking contributions to gyrochronology (stellar age determination via rotation) and radius inflation in young stars. He pioneered statistical methods for analyzing stellar systems using Gaia data, revealing paradigm-shifting insights into low-mass star evolution.
Recent publications highlight his work on:
- Stellar rotational modulation cataloging
- Transition regimes in young stars
- Solar coronal heating mechanisms
- Galactic kinematic group evolution
Lanzafame coordinates major research work packages for Gaia, including Special Variability Detection and Solar-like Variability. He serves as referee for top astrophysical journals and has secured millions in research funding through national and international grants.
