Alena Buyx is Professor of Ethics in Medicine and Health Technologies at the Technical University of Munich's School of Medicine and Health. She is a leading figure in biomedical ethics, serving on the German Ethics Council (2016-2024, Chair 2020-2024) and the WHO Expert Advisory Committee (2019-2021) on human genome editing.
Her academic journey includes a medical degree and postgraduate qualifications in philosophy and sociology. Previous appointments span the University of Kiel, University of Münster, Harvard University, University College London, and the Nuffield Council on Bioethics (as Assistant Director).
Professor Buyx's research focuses on ethics of medical innovation and health technologies, research ethics, solidarity and justice in public health and healthcare, and participatory approaches in biomedicine. She champions interdisciplinary embedded ethics, collaborating with clinicians and scholars across disciplines to inform policy and practice.
Recent publications reveal a trajectory toward AI ethics in healthcare, robot therapy, biobanking consent, and global health solidarity, emphasizing proactive ethical integration in technological development and policy-making.
