Prof. Alena Buyx is a Professor of Medical Ethics and Health Technologies at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) and Director of the Institute for the History and Ethics of Medicine (IGEM). She holds a venia legendi in ethics, history, and theory of medicine. Her career includes roles at Harvard University, University College London, and leadership positions in the German Ethics Council (2016–2024, serving as Chair from 2020–2024). She advises governmental bodies, international consortia, and policymakers on biomedical ethics, genome editing, and pandemic response.
Her research spans biomedical ethics, embedded ethics in medical innovation, health technology governance, and solidarity in healthcare systems. Notable projects include the INTERVENE consortium for genome prediction, NEHEMIAH addressing data-rich medicine ethics, and pandemic-related studies like CollPan (collateral pandemic effects). She has secured over €3.5M in third-party funding since 2019.
Key publications include work on embedded ethics in AI (Nature Machine Intelligence, 2020), genome editing policy (WHO advisory roles), and pandemic ethics (Lancet Regional Health Europe, 2021). Awards include the Order of Merit of Germany (2024) and Leopoldina membership (2020).
Prof. Buyx collaborates across disciplines, integrating ethics into technology development and policy. Her work emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches, public communication of science, and equitable healthcare systems.
