Alejandro Cortazar is an Associate Professor of Spanish at Louisiana State University (LSU), affiliated with the College of Humanities & Social Sciences and the Department of World Languages, Literatures & Cultures. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Iowa (1997). His research focuses on Mexican literature and culture, nation-building in 19th-century Spanish America, and Hispanic women writers.

Research Interests:
Explores how Mexican literature shaped national identity during the 19th century, with particular attention to women’s contributions. Analyzes themes like romanticism, caudillo narratives, and the intersection of politics and culture in works by authors such as Juan Díaz Covarrubias and Rosario Castellanos.

- Juarez’s Torch and Medal of Honor (2006) for contributions to Benito Juárez legacy analysis
- Manship Research Fellowship (2005) supporting research on nationalism in Mexican novels
