Alejandro Acevedo-Gutierrez is a Professor of Biology at Western Washington University, with a strong focus on both marine mammal ecology and science education. He earned his Licenciatura (B.Sc.) in Marine Biology from the Universidad Autónoma de Baja California Sur, Mexico, followed by a Ph.D. from Texas A&M University. His postdoctoral research at the University of California Santa Cruz involved studying blue and fin whales. Currently, he leads the Marine Mammal Ecology Lab, collaborating with Dr. Dietmar Schwarz and Western students to investigate harbor seals' ecological roles in the Salish Sea, including their impact on salmon populations and foraging behaviors using environmental DNA and genetic analysis.
His educational contributions include improving STEM teacher preparation programs and promoting diversity in science education through partnerships with institutions in Washington State. He emphasizes mentorship, engaging undergraduate and graduate students in the full scientific process. Acevedo-Gutierrez's career reflects a commitment to balancing academic research with public outreach, having contributed to an Academy Award-nominated IMAX film and advocating for science communication.
Personal interests include outdoor exploration, playing/watching football (fútbol), and singing with the guitar.
