Dr. Ale Boussalem is a Lecturer in Human Geography at the School of Geography and Sustainable Development, University of St Andrews. They serve as the Wellbeing Officer for the School and are module coordinator for courses such as Qualitative Methods for Human Geographers and Geographies of Race, Racialisation and Racism. Their academic focus lies at the intersection of queer geographies and geographies of race and ethnicity.
Dr. Boussalem’s research explores intersections of homo/bi/transphobia and Islamophobia in the experiences of LGBTQ+ individuals from Muslim backgrounds in Brussels, Belgium. Their current project examines racialisation and identity formation among Italians of North-African descent. Methodologically, they employ qualitative approaches including participatory theatre, interviews, and participant observation, grounded in queer, intersectional, and critical race frameworks.
Dr. Boussalem’s recent publications focus on LGBTQ+ experiences in urban contexts, particularly in Brussels, addressing issues of spatial marginalization, racialization, and identity negotiation. Their work bridges queer theory with critical race studies, emphasizing intersectional analyses of marginalized communities.
Dr. Boussalem supervises PhD students Gray Black and Caroline May. While no grants are explicitly listed, their research projects suggest active engagement in funded academic initiatives. They contribute to teaching and wellbeing initiatives within the School.
They are affiliated with the Geographies of Sustainability, Society, Inequalities and Possibilities research group at the University of St Andrews.
