Alda Mari

Alda Mari is a Research Director at CNRS affiliated with the Institut Jean-Nicod at École Normale Supérieure in Paris, where she directs the LANGAGE, PENSÉE ET COMPORTEMENT research team. Her academic background includes training in ancient languages (Greek, Latin, Sanskrit, Vedic, Pali) and computational linguistics in Italy and Switzerland. She has held research collaborations with CUNY and the University of Chicago, and has led significant projects including an ANR on genericity.

Mari is a formal semanticist whose research spans modal verbs, adverbs, attitudes, and cross-linguistic studies primarily focusing on French, Italian, English, and Greek. Her work has evolved from theoretical investigations of genericity, reciprocity, and plurality to applied research on intention detection and text mining through the INTACT project. She has recently expanded into diachronic formal semantics, examining how semantic structures change over time.

Her scholarly output demonstrates consistent engagement with both theoretical and applied aspects of linguistics, with recent publications addressing epistemic modality, question formation, social media discourse analysis, and computational applications for intention detection. Her work bridges formal semantics with practical applications in crisis management and social media analysis.

Mari's research has been supported by multiple ANR grants and collaborative projects, including INTACT (2018-2019) and INTACT II (2020-2022) focusing on intention detection and action prediction. She has also contributed to projects on automatic detection of sexism in social networks (2017-2019).
