Dr. Albrecht Schulte-Hostedde is a Full Professor at the School of Natural Sciences (Laurentian University) and a Canada Research Chair (Tier II) in Applied Evolutionary Ecology (2011-2021). He is also an Adjunct Professor at Trent University and has held visiting positions at IRD and CEFE in France.
- Education: BSc (University of Western Ontario, 1994), MSc (University of Guelph, 1997), PhD (University of Western Ontario, 2002), NSERC Postdoctoral Fellowship (Queen's University, 2002-2003)
His research bridges evolutionary and behavioral ecology with conservation science, focusing on urbanization impacts on wildlife, host-parasite dynamics, sexual selection, and population genetics. He employs behavioral, endocrine, and genetic techniques, particularly studying small mammals in Algonquin Provincial Park and urban Sudbury.
Recent publications highlight collaborations with zoos and government agencies, emphasizing tick infestation effects, stress physiology, gut microbiota, and zoo-based virus surveillance. These works span urban ecology, conservation physiology, and captive breeding programs.
- Scientific Awards: Laurentian University Research Fellowship (2024-27), Canada Research Chair (Tier II) (2011-2021), Early Researcher Award (2005)
He has mentored students (e.g., R. Ouellette, P.M.L. Van Leeuwen) who pursued graduate studies and careers in government/NGOs. His lab (Evolutionary and Behavioural ecology of Vertebrates Lab) is highly collaborative, involving colleagues and institutions like the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, Toronto Zoo, and McGill University.
