Alberto López Ortega is a postdoctoral researcher at the Faculty of Social Sciences, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU Amsterdam), and a Ramón Areces Fellow and Visiting Scholar at Harvard University's Center of European Studies (2024-2025). Starting July 2025, he will assume the role of Assistant Professor at VU Amsterdam. He specializes in comparative politics, electoral behavior, representation, and public opinion, with a focus on identity-based polarization and LGBTQ+ rights in liberal democracies. His methodological expertise lies in quantitative techniques, including experimental survey methods.
He co-directs the electoral prediction market Predilect and co-leads Working Group 1 of the COST Action on LGBTI+ Social and Economic (in)equalities. He earned his Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Zurich. His research has been published in high-impact journals such as Nature Human Behaviour, American Political Science Review, and Political Behavior, addressing topics like discrimination against minority political candidates and the intersection of LGBTQ+ rights with democratic institutions.
Scientific Awards: Ramón Areces Fellow (2024-2025).
Research & Collaborations: His work explores the normalization of far-right politics, voter preferences under visual vs. textual cues, and the role of experimental surveys in understanding sociocultural attitudes. He collaborates globally, including projects analyzing trust in science across 68 countries and LGBTQ+ discrimination patterns in Europe.
