Albert L. Park serves as the Bank of America Associate Professor of Pacific Basin Studies and Associate Dean of the Faculty for Research in the History Department at Claremont McKenna College. He directs EnviroLab, a cross-disciplinary initiative focused on environmental issues in Asia, and is the founder of the open-access book series Environments of East Asia published by Cornell University Press.
Dr. Park's research spans modern Korean and East Asian intellectual and social history, environmental history, and the relationship between economic structures and cultural/religious frameworks. His work explores how environmental movements emerged in modern Korea, the role of religion in social activism during Japanese occupation, and the dynamics of modernity and globalization in East Asia. He approaches these topics through interdisciplinary lenses that connect historical analysis with contemporary environmental and social challenges.
His recent scholarly output reveals a growing focus on environmental history and sustainable futures, with publications examining Korean environmental movements, rural renewal, and the intersection of technology and aging populations. Park's work increasingly bridges historical analysis with contemporary policy challenges, particularly regarding globalization, demographic shifts, and environmental sustainability in East Asia.
Among his significant honors are four Fulbright Fellowships for Research, an Abe Fellowship from the Social Science Research Council/Japan Foundation, and multiple major grants including a $1.4 million LIASE Implementation Grant for EnviroLab Asia from the Henry Luce Foundation and a $200,000 Japan Foundation grant for his Sustainable Futures project.
Dr. Park has advised numerous graduate students across institutions including Harvard, Cornell, University of Chicago, and University of Southern California, with research spanning social and environmental history, architecture, Christianity in Korea, and transnational Korean diaspora studies. His current $200,000 Japan Foundation project Sustainable Futures: Overcoming Disparities examines demographic changes, rural life renewal, and elder care technology across Japan, the United States, and Asia.
As Director of EnviroLab, Park leads a major interdisciplinary initiative that brings together faculty from Pomona and Scripps Colleges, academics from multiple Asian countries, and Claremont McKenna students to address environmental challenges through cross-disciplinary research, fieldwork, and community engagement.
