Dr Albert Bates is a Research Fellow in Classics at Sidney Sussex College, University of Cambridge (2022–2025). Previously, he served as a Lecturer in Classics at King's College London (2022–2023). His research focuses on the interplay between visual, literary, and philosophical cultures of Graeco-Roman antiquity, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches. Bates holds a PhD in Classics from Christ's College, Cambridge (2018–2022), an MPhil from Wolfson College, Cambridge (2016–2017), and an MA from St. Hilda's College, Oxford (2012–2016).
His academic specialities include Greek and Latin Literature (A), Classical Art and Archaeology (D), and Interdisciplinary Studies (X). Active in outreach, he co-organizes events like the 'Bridging Binaries LGBTQ+ Tour' and 'Localizing the Indigenous, Globalizing the Classics' seminar. He is affiliated with the Faculty of Classics' Museum of Classical Archaeology and contributes to public engagement initiatives such as the 'In Conversation With' series.
Bates' work bridges textual analysis with material culture, examining how ancient visual and literary traditions informed philosophical discourse. His research aligns with projects on ancient Mediterranean cultural interactions and the transmission of knowledge across media.
