Dr. Alastair Su is an Assistant Professor of History at Westmont College, specializing in the political economy of early republican America and the history of capitalism. He holds a Ph.D. from Stanford University (2021) and a Harvard College degree (2014, Phi Beta Kappa). His research has garnered awards from institutions like the American Council of Learned Societies and the Business History Conference.
His current book project, Flowering Gold: American Capital and the Opium War (Yale UP), examines Boston merchants' role in the 19th-century opium trade to China and its geopolitical consequences. At Westmont, he teaches courses on capitalism, US foreign relations, the Civil War, and US/California history surveys.
His scholarly work bridges economic history, transnational studies, and the impact of global commodity flows. Awards include the Elizabeth Spilman Rosenfield Prize for his dissertation and the John E. Rovensky Fellowship in Business and Economic History.
