Alanaise Ferguson serves as an Associate Professor in the Department of Community, Culture and Global Studies within the Irving K. Barber Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at the University of British Columbia Okanagan. Her office is located in LM4 627 on campus, and she actively supervises graduate students in her field of expertise.
Professor Ferguson specializes in Community Engagement, Social Change, Equity, Indigenous Knowledges, Indigenous Studies, and Psychology. Her research focuses on qualitative, mixed-methods, community-engaged, and decolonizing research methodologies. She conducts applied research in First Nations, Métis, and Inuit (FNMI) mental health, healing, and well-being, with particular attention to oral First Nations language documentation and revitalization. Her work also includes intervention evaluation research in trauma repair and addictions reduction.
In her teaching role, Professor Ferguson offers courses in Indigenous Research Methodologies, Residential Schools and Reconciliation, and Indigenous Research Methods. She is committed to advancing Indigenous knowledge systems and approaches within academic frameworks, with a focus on community-based and decolonizing practices.
As a graduate student supervisor, Professor Ferguson guides emerging scholars in Indigenous studies, community engagement, and decolonizing research methods. Her mentorship focuses on ethical research practices that center Indigenous perspectives and methodologies.
