Alan Stavitsky is a Professor at the Donald W. Reynolds School of Journalism at the University of Nevada, Reno. He served as Dean of the Reynolds School and Center for Advanced Media Studies from 2012 to 2023, during which time he expanded faculty and staff, launched new programs in Spanish-language media, science communication, and film production, and established the Reynolds Media Lab. His leadership earned national recognition, including the Online News Association’s Grand Prize for Innovation in Journalism Education and the AEJMC Equity and Diversity Award.

Stavitsky’s research focuses on media policy, digital transition in journalism, and public broadcasting ethics. He authored/co-authored books on public broadcasting history and ethics and served as a consultant to public media organizations globally. His work also includes governance in public media, highlighted by a 2024 UNR Research & Innovation Grant.

He also directed the Reynolds School’s public radio stations, KUNR and KNCJ, and led initiatives like the RSJ Project for the Revitalization of Local News.
