Alan McDougall is a Professor of History at the University of Guelph, Canada, specializing in the history of sport, modern German history, European cinema, and 20th-century European history. His research explores the intersection of football with political ideologies, cultural identities, and transnational narratives.

McDougall's research interrogates football's role in shaping collective memory, state-society relations, and Cold War dynamics. His forthcoming 2025 book Dreams and Songs to Sing analyzes Liverpool FC through fan experiences spanning from Shankly to Klopp. His 2020 work Contested Fields provides a global history of modern football, while The People’s Game (2014) examines football's constrained autonomy in East Germany.
His publications and invited talks span topics including the Heysel disaster, Hillsborough, European football's pandemic response, and football's cultural significance in divided Germany. Awards include recognition from Sport in History and the NASSH Anthology Award.
