Professor Alan Lourens is the Head of the Conservatorium of Music at the University of Western Australia (ranked top 100 globally). He holds a Professorial role and specializes in conducting, brass performance, and music composition. Previously, he held academic positions in Singapore, Dubai, and Australia.
Education: PhD and M.M. in Conducting from Indiana University's Jacobs School of Music (studying under Ray E. Cramer and Daniel Perantoni). Also holds a Music Education undergraduate degree. Early career included 5 years as a high school music teacher and state-level conducting support roles.
Research focuses on conducting pedagogy, brass band repertoire, euphonium performance, and university arts administration. His compositions emphasize contemporary wind ensemble and brass band music, with works performed globally. Notable pieces include Euphonium Concerto (2016) and recent works like Old Town Hall (2025).
Publications include contributions to Teaching Music Through Performance in Band and co-authored books on university development. Awards include the Performers Certificate from Indiana University for his master's recital.
Advising: Supervised 7 academic works. Active in university arts policy and ensemble direction. Engagements include a 2019 Musica Viva pre-concert talk.
