Alan Lee is a techne-funded PhD candidate and Visiting Lecturer at the University of Roehampton's School of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences, affiliated with the Centre for Inclusive Humanities. His research focuses on the historical and political dimensions of LGBTQ+ symbols, particularly the rainbow flag and its entanglements with other queer symbols like the pink triangle and labrys axe. He explores how these symbols shape Pride marches and queer liberation narratives, using London as a key case study.
Education: MA in Cold War History (University of Roehampton, 2021), BA (Hons) History (University of Roehampton, 2020).
Research interests include Cold War cultural politics, queer historiography, and the socio-political roles of national and communal symbols. His work bridges queer theory with historical analysis, exemplified by his 2024 conference presentation at Ghent University and a forthcoming article on Cold War German flag symbolism.
Recent activities include academic talks on 'Queer(y)ing the Pride March' and 'Germany’s Cold Civil War: The Competition for Legitimacy in Divided Germany.' He is actively developing his master's dissertation into a publishable article.
